What is Reputation?
Reputation is one of the three dimensions of Visibility Posture. It measures what people say about your product across directories: review volume, ratings, sentiment, and whether you actually respond to the feedback you receive.
A product with thousands of reviews and strong ratings has a very different Reputation posture than one with zero reviews on most platforms—even if both are listed in the same directories. Reach gets you into the room; Reputation determines whether anyone takes you seriously once you're there.
What Reputation Counts
Reputation is more than an average star rating. The signals that move it include the number of recent reviews (older reviews carry less weight on most platforms), the spread across major directories (heavy reviews on G2 with nothing on Capterra is a thin profile), the share of organic vs. incentivized reviews, the sentiment in the written feedback, and whether you respond to negative reviews publicly.
These signals also feed directory rating and ranking algorithms, which in turn drive badges, grid positions, and shortlist inclusion. Strong Reputation compounds: it earns higher placement, which surfaces you to more buyers, who become more reviewers.
Reputation Within Visibility Posture
Reputation pairs with Reach (where you appear) and Fidelity (how accurately you're represented). The overall VP score is dragged down by whichever dimension is weakest—a great rating on three platforms still produces a thin overall posture if your Reach is narrow or your Fidelity has drifted.
On the operational side, Reputation is improved through review campaigns, prompt response to existing reviews, and steady review pacing rather than one-off spikes (which platforms like G2 and Trustpilot detect and discount). It's the dimension that takes the longest to build and the easiest to lose.
