24 SourceForge Alternatives for Software and Open-Source Projects

Software directories outside the SourceForge network (2026)

SourceForge began as a home for open-source projects and is now also one of the largest business software directories, with nearly 20 million monthly visitors comparing more than 100,000 products (as of October 2026). Slashdot Media owns it, along with Slashdot and Top Business Software, and the three share product profiles and reviews. A basic listing is free, and so are its badges.

Vendors usually look beyond SourceForge for reach. Its awards are percentile-based, so a product with fewer reviews competes with much larger ones, and its sister sites draw on the same review corpus. Directories outside that network reach separate audiences, and open-source projects often want directories built around open source.

We found 24 directories outside the SourceForge network, including 4 built for open-source projects, and 14 of them offer a free listing. We left out Slashdot and Top Business Software, which share SourceForge's profiles, as well as launch platforms, marketplaces and the review sites that expect an enterprise customer base. Selling to large companies? The TrustRadius alternatives list covers enterprise review sites.

Global review platform covering products and services across all industries - not limited to software. It has a less professional appeal than Capterra and G2, although many B2B SaaS companies leverage Trustpilot very effectively. It is not quite a company directory (no information about founders, funding etc) but not really a product one either, somehow it reflects how business is conducted, so under software products you will find a lot of reviews regarding customer support, billing and general business attitude of a company. And those review stars often appear directly in Google search results as rich snippets.

Best for: Company-level reputation, which a buyer can check before your product reaches a shortlist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best alternatives to SourceForge?
For a commercial software product, G2 and Capterra add the largest independent review audiences, and AlternativeTo and SaaSHub help people who search for a competitor by name. For an open-source project, the open-source directories in this list, such as LibHunt and OpenAlternative, are the closest fit. All of them sit outside the SourceForge network, so a listing there reaches a separate audience.
Are Slashdot and Top Business Software alternatives to SourceForge?
No. Slashdot Media owns SourceForge, Slashdot and Top Business Software, and the three share product profiles and reviews. A SourceForge listing already shows up on the other two, which is why this list leaves them out. Our SourceForge guide explains how the shared profiles work.
Is SourceForge free to list on?
Yes. Claiming, editing and managing a basic SourceForge listing is free, and its Leader, Top Performer and other badges are free to display in your marketing. SourceForge sells paid visibility and lead generation on top of the free listing.
Why do vendors look beyond SourceForge?
Usually to reach more buyers. SourceForge awards are percentile-based, so a product with fewer reviews competes against much larger ones, and its sister sites share one review corpus. Listing on independent directories as well spreads your presence across separate audiences and gives buyers and AI assistants more sources that describe your product the same way.
Where should an open-source project list?
The open-source directories in this list are a good start. The open-source directories page goes further: it groups open-source-first directories, general software directories that carry open-source profiles, and launch platforms that suit a public repository.

How we curate this catalog

Editorially curated — we don't work with spam directories or freshly created sites. Before we add a directory, we check:

  • Domain Rating (Ahrefs) of at least 40.
  • Traffic starts at roughly 100k+ monthly visits for general directories (Similarweb).
  • For niche directories, the same DR bar but a lower traffic threshold — sometimes around 10k — because a focused, relevant listing carries real value.

No paid placement — a spot in this catalog can't be bought.
