What is a Listicle?
A listicle is an article structured as a ranked or curated list —think "Top 10 Project Management Tools" or "Best CRM Software for Small Business." In the software world, listicles are one of the most common content formats for both directories and independent publishers. They serve as pre-filtered starting points for buyers who want a curated set of options rather than browsing an entire category.
Listicles matter for software companies because they're often the first thing a prospect encounters when researching a purchase. A buyer searching "best help desk software 2026" is likely to find listicles from G2, Capterra, TechRadar, Zapier, and similar publishers before they find any individual vendor's website. Being included—or excluded—from these lists directly affects whether you make it onto a buyer's initial shortlist.
Directory Listicles vs. Editorial Listicles
There are two distinct types of listicles in the B2B software space. Directory-generated listicles are produced by platforms like G2, Capterra, and SourceForge using their own data—review scores, popularity metrics, and ranking algorithms determine which products appear. These are generated at scale across hundreds of categories and carry the directory's high domain rating, giving them strong search visibility.
Editorial listicles are written by publishers, bloggers, or media outlets (Zapier, TechCrunch, PCMag, etc.) based on editorial judgment, testing, or research. Getting included in these typically requires the product to have enough visibility and credibility—often established through directory presence—for the editorial team to discover and consider it. Some publishers actively consult directory data when researching their lists, creating a direct link between directory performance and editorial inclusion.
Getting Included in Listicles
For directory-generated listicles, inclusion is largely algorithmic. Having enough reviews, being in the right categories, and maintaining complete listings with accurate structured data are the primary factors. For editorial listicles, the path is less direct but still connected to directory presence: editorial teams research products the same way buyers do, and directory rankings are often their starting point.
AI answer engines add another dimension. When asked to recommend software, AI systems frequently generate their own listicle-style responses—drawing heavily from directory data and existing published listicles. A product that appears consistently across multiple directory listicles is more likely to be cited in AI recommendations, creating a reinforcing cycle between directory presence and AI visibility.
