What is Domain Rating?
Domain Rating (DR) is a metric developed by SEO tools like Ahrefs that scores a website's backlink authority on a scale of 0 to 100. The higher the score, the more authoritative the domain is considered by search engines. Domain Rating reflects the quantity and quality of other websites linking to a domain—a site linked to by thousands of reputable sources will have a higher DR than a new site with few backlinks.
Domain Rating matters for software companies not because of their own website's DR, but because of where their products are listed. When your product appears on a high-DR platform, the content on that page inherits some of the domain's authority. Search engines and AI systems treat information from high-authority domains as more credible, which influences whether your product shows up in search results and AI-generated recommendations.
Why Software Directories Have High Domain Ratings
Major software directories carry some of the highest domain ratings on the web. G2 (DR 91), Capterra (DR 91), Trustpilot (DR 93), and similar platforms have accumulated massive backlink profiles over years of being cited by media, vendors, analysts, and other high-authority sites. This isn't accidental—directories are inherently link-worthy because they aggregate useful, comparable data that other sites want to reference.
This high DR is one of the reasons directory listings punch above their weight in search results. A product page on G2 can outrank the vendor's own website for competitive search queries, simply because G2's domain authority gives the page a head start. For SaaS companies, this means that an optimized directory listing on a high-DR platform can be one of the most effective pieces of web presence you have—sometimes more visible than content on your own site.
Domain Rating and AI Discovery
AI answer engines don't use Domain Rating directly in the way search engines use backlinks. But the correlation holds: AI systems retrieve from sources they consider authoritative and information-rich, and the same properties that drive high DR—wide citation, rich structured data, frequent updates—also make directories preferred sources for AI retrieval. When an AI system needs to compare CRM tools or recommend project management software, it disproportionately pulls from the high-DR directories where that comparison data already exists in structured form.
This creates a compounding advantage for companies with strong directory presence. Your listing on a DR-91 platform gets indexed by search engines, cited by AI systems, and referenced by the listicles and comparison articles that both humans and AI consult. Each layer reinforces the others, making consistent directory management an investment that appreciates over time.
