If you've ever looked at a competitor's profile on a software review site and counted their reviews - 200, 400, a thousand - you know the feeling. They have social proof. You have a profile with four reviews and a logo that's slightly cropped.
The instinct is to catch up. Run a review campaign. Ask every customer. Offer incentives. Get the number up. And there are good reasons to do that - reviews feed into badge programs on platforms like G2 and Capterra (the two largest B2B software review sites), they influence how human buyers perceive you when they're browsing those platforms, and collecting them is a discipline worth building.
There's a question worth asking first: does the number of reviews affect whether AI recommends your product?
The Data Says No
G2 - the largest B2B software review platform, with over 2 million reviews - published an analysis in early 2026 of 30,000 AI citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.
Their finding: at the category level, directories with 10% more reviews get roughly 2% more AI citations. G2 presents this as meaningful - and at massive scale, across hundreds of categories, small percentages do compound. Look at what's underneath though: review volume explains less than 2% of the variance in AI citation patterns (R-squared of 0.009). The other 98% comes from brand authority, content quality, organic search visibility, and cross-web mentions.
A separate study by Quoleady, a content marketing consultancy that researches how LLMs rank products, tested individual products. They found the correlation between review count and ChatGPT ranking was -0.21 for Capterra and -0.16 for G2. Weak, near-zero, and slightly negative. A productivity tool with under 100 reviews ranked above a competitor with more than 4,000.
What did correlate: having a profile at all. One hundred percent of tools ChatGPT recommended had Capterra profiles. Ninety-nine percent had G2 profiles. Presence on the platform was the threshold. Review count above that had almost no measurable effect.
We're rooting for AI to eventually read badges as trust signals - a G2 Leader badge backed by hundreds of verified reviews should carry more weight than an anonymous Reddit thread. That's not what we currently see in the data.
Presence Is the Threshold, Volume Is Noise
Having a profile on the platforms AI reads from gets you into the dataset. Whether that profile has 12 reviews or 1,200 barely changes how AI treats it.
The category leadership game - collecting reviews to earn badges, climb G2 Grid quadrants, win Capterra Shortlist placements - is a legitimate strategy, and we've written guides for every major badge program. Fresh reviews feed into those programs with specific thresholds, and badges matter for human buyers who see them on your profile.
On Trustpilot specifically, volume is the game. TeamViewer manages over 120,000 reviews there. Trustpilot's domain authority makes it the fifth most cited domain on ChatGPT. That's platform-level authority driving citations though - individual vendors don't need six figures of reviews to show up.
If your goal is to show up when AI recommends software in your category, the review count race matters far less than simply being present on the platforms AI reads from. And some of those platforms have no reviews at all.
