Prompt Insider tested 50 buyer-intent questions across five SaaS categories to see which companies ChatGPT recommended most consistently, how recommendations changed when buyer needs shifted, and whether appearing often was the same as being recommended first.
TL;DR
The most visible brand in each category appeared in 84% of prompts on average. HubSpot, ClickUp, and Peec AI each reached 90% visibility in their strongest categories.
The most visible brand was not always the brand ChatGPT ranked first. That makes two metrics useful: visibility rate, or how often a brand appears in the top three, and first-recommendation rate, or how often it appears first.
Results from the test
| Category | Most visible | Visibility | Most often #1 | #1 rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CRM | HubSpot | 90% | HubSpot | 60% |
| Email marketing | HubSpot | 80% | Customer.io | 40% |
| Project management | ClickUp | 90% | ClickUp / Linear | 40% each |
| Customer support | Intercom / Zendesk / Help Scout | 70% each | Intercom | 50% |
| AI visibility | Peec AI | 90% | Profound | 40% |
What the test showed
Three patterns stood out:
- Consistency across prompts. HubSpot appeared in 9 of 10 CRM prompts, ClickUp in 9 of 10 project management prompts, and Peec AI in 9 of 10 AI visibility prompts.
- Visibility did not always mean first place. HubSpot appeared in 80% of email marketing prompts, but Customer.io was the first recommendation most often. Peec AI appeared in 90% of AI visibility prompts, while Profound led more first-position recommendations.
- Tied visibility still produced different positioning. Intercom, Zendesk, and Help Scout each appeared in 70% of customer support prompts, but Intercom ranked first in 50%.
Mention frequency alone does not show the full recommendation picture. Position and context matter too.
What SaaS marketers should track
Use a repeatable prompt set instead of judging AI visibility from one favorable answer. For each prompt, track:
- Brand visibility. Did the company appear in the top three?
- Position. Was it ranked first, second, or third?
- Competitors. Which brands appeared alongside it?
- Sources. Which sites or pages were cited in the answer?
- Change over time. Repeat the same prompts to see whether visibility and positioning move.
The content around the product still matters. Buyers ask about price, ease of use, alternatives, company size, integrations, and specific workflows, so those questions should be answered clearly on the company's site and across credible third-party sources.
OpenAI says the automated systems behind ChatGPT search decide which results to present by "considering factors like user intent, relevance, and recency." That does not guarantee a recommendation, but it supports keeping product information clear, current, and consistent.
Methodology: the 50 prompts tested
The test used 50 buyer-intent prompts across five SaaS categories, with 10 prompts per category. It was run on September 20, 2026, in one controlled ChatGPT session using GPT 5.6 Sol (High), so the results should be treated as a snapshot rather than a permanent ranking.
Positions were based on order of appearance. When ChatGPT returned an unnumbered list, the first brand mentioned counted as position one, the second as position two, and the third as position three. Results were not reordered subjectively.

The bigger takeaway
The test started with a simple question: which SaaS products does ChatGPT recommend as the buyer's needs change? The results suggest consistency matters as much as any single first-place ranking.
Some brands appeared across a wide range of prompts, while others became more competitive in specific contexts. For SaaS marketers, a single prompt is too small a unit to manage. The useful work is understanding where the brand appears, why it appears, and whether that visibility holds when the buyer changes the question.
FAQ
Is one ChatGPT answer enough to measure AI visibility?
No. One answer only shows how a brand performed for one prompt at one point in time. A group of buyer-intent prompts gives a more useful baseline and makes it easier to spot patterns.
What is the difference between AI visibility and AI preference?
In this test, visibility measures how often a brand appeared in the top three recommendations. Preference measures how often it appeared first. A brand can perform well on one metric without leading the other.
Does appearing more often mean a brand is more likely to rank first?
Not necessarily. HubSpot led email marketing visibility, while Customer.io was the first recommendation more often. The same pattern appeared in AI visibility, where Peec AI appeared more frequently but Profound led more first-position recommendations.
How often should SaaS companies repeat an AI visibility test?
There is no fixed schedule, but repeating the same prompt set regularly makes changes easier to measure. The key is to keep the prompts consistent so results can be compared over time.
Can SaaS companies guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation?
No. Recommendations can vary based on the prompt, model, context, available information, and current search results. Companies can improve how clearly their products are represented, but there is no guaranteed ranking.
